Emmanuel Music presents the Boston premiere of John Harbison’s grand opera, The Great Gatsby in concert. Harbison, adapting his own libretto from F. Scott Fizgerald’s classic novel, has created a soundscape that evokes the Roaring Twenties: the giddy jazz-inspired pop songs, the madcap dances, the omnipresent radio. Harbison underpins all the frivolity with more ominous music: the themes of romantic obsession, casual cruelty, corruption, betrayal and murder.
