Richard Farrant (c. 1525-1580)

Elizabethan composer Richard Farrant (c. 1525-1580) was Master of the Choristers at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor.  The Lenten motet "Hide not thou thy face" sets Psalm 27, v. 9, the psalm for the day in the Revised Common Lectionary. A specifically direct, declamatory and expressive motet, each phrase of text and its meaning seem inseparable from the music accompanying it.
