James Primosch (1956-2021)

The distinguished Anglo-American poet Denise Levertov was a parishioner at Emmanuel Church Emmanuel in the 1970's and 80's before moving to Seattle. Born in England, she taught at Stanford and in the last decade of her life at University of Washington. She died in December of 1999. Her beautiful poem was set by James Primosch and was the first motet of this composer to be performed by us. James Primosch was professor of composition at Penn and wrote several motets for the Emmanuel choir on texts of Levertov. The motet is dedicated to our friend, John Harbison.
