Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
The presence of the piano in the Nave gives us the opportunity to perform one of Schubert's greatest small choral masterpieces, "Gebet." This marvelous, warm prayer is from 1826, two years before his death at age 31. Against a gentle ostinato in the piano, the chorus sings a lovely, long-breathed melody. After more dramatic recitatives by four soloists, a new melody led by the tenors brings the piece to a quiet and poetic close.
