Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672)

The first words of this brilliant Christmas motet are familiar from Handel's Messiah. The initial Christmas-y lilt gives way to tuneful birdlike imitations ("Wonderful, Counsellor"). Then, with less familiar texts, the piece gets increasingly stronger, more serious and winds up in a quite a different place than it started.
