Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672)

Again, an aria, this time set to a beautiful Luther hymn text. This is perhaps the most personal, heartfelt piece in the entire sequence. It stands near the beginning of the great German strophic song tradition. The setting beautifully accommodates ad illuminates the varied inflections of each of the three verses. Not until Schubert did music again achieve such deep shadows below such a lucid surface.
