Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672)

The parable of the fig tree begets one of the most luxurious and lovely of Schütz's late works, "Sehet an den Feigenbaum." Notice how the voices are intertwined with the instruments like branches in a tree. Schütz puts an instrumental part above the soprano voice to further emphasize the verdant nature of his counterpoint. The rhythm dances into triple meter at the words "the summer is near."
