Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672)

Schütz’ Easter motet “Feget den alten Sauerteig aus” has a jolly surface that disguises a deep message. The Corinthians text uses the metaphor of the old leavened bread and the new unleavened bread to contrast the old hypocrisy with the new sincerity and truth. The ecstatic Alleluias provide a marvelous release.
