Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672)
Chorale settings are not nearly so prevalent in Schütz as in Bach. The grand setting of "Nun Danket alle Gott" that comes at the end of the third book of Symphoniae Sacrae thus stands out. The three repeated notes that begin the chorale tune become the dominant musical idea in the work. The six vocal soloists combine with the two solo violins and the chorus to create a large and impressive texture.
