Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672)

Schütz' little concerto for four voices, 2 violins, bassoon and continuo, "Saget den Gästen" is very much of the type of piece one finds in the third volume of Sacred Symphonies published in 1650. This work, however, dates from as early as 1620.  The Gospel reading of the great banquet is set not so much as a narrative but as a meditation on one of the most difficult and strange stories in the Bible. For all of the color of the voices and particularly of the violin parts, the work is interior in tone, not illustrative.
