The
Hercules Society was established in 1999 by Emmanuel
Music as a way for a select group of donors to make larger
contributions. The goal of the Society is to raise enough
money through a campaign to underwrite a concert production
of a major work each year. The first endeavor of the Hercules
Society was to underwrite two performances of Handel's Hercules
featuring James Maddalena, Jeffrey Gall and renowned Emmanuel
Music alumnus, Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson, in the fall of 2000.
Those donors who contributed $1000 or more became founding
members of the Hercules Society and were even honored
by the Boston Globe: "Boston's most memorable event of
the year, perhaps the decade, was a concert performance of
Handel's Hercules
All praise also to the individual
patrons and members of Emmanuel Music's Hercules Society
who helped pay for this adventure."
In
the spring of 2001, the Hercules Society underwrote
the Peter Sellars production of two staged Bach cantatas also
featuring mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson, which traveled
then to Lincoln Center, Paris, London and Lucerne. This spring
the Hercules Society will support Emmanuel's production Handel's
Saul. The production will feature Sanford Sylvan in
the title role, as well as Boston favorites Kendra Colton,
Frank Kelley and Jayne West.
Emmanuel
Music began a tradition of performing the operas and oratorios
of Handel more than twenty years ago, beginning with Atalanta,
and to date has performed more of Handel's works than any
other performing organization in Boston and perhaps even the
United States. Becoming a part of Emmanuel Music's Hercules Society
entitles members to special program recognition, complimentary
patron tickets to the concert being underwritten by the Society,
opportunities to meet the singers and musicians of Emmanuel
Music at special, post-concert events, and the satisfaction
of knowing that because of the your financial support of the
Hercules Society, Emmanuel's long tradition of
musical excellence will be able to continue.
