Heinrich Schütz

soprano, alto

Ave Maria, gratia plena!

     – Qualis est ista salutatio? –

Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
Ne timeas, Maria,
Invenisti gratiam apud Deum;
Ecce concipies in utero,
Et paries filium,
Et vocabis nomen ejus Jesum,
His erit magnus
Et filius Altissimi vocabitur.

     – Quomodo fiat istud, quoniam virum non cognosco? –

Ne timeas, Maria,
Spiritus sanctus superveniet in te,
Et virtus Altissimi
Obumbrabit tibi,
Idoeque et quod nascetur
Ex te sanctum,
Vocabitur filius Dei,
Et ecce, Elisabeth, tua cognata,
Et ipsa concepit filium in senectute sua,
Et hic est nemsis sextus,
Quae vocatus sterilis,
Quia non erit apud Deum impossibile omne verbum.

     – Ecce ancilla Domini,
       Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum. –

Alleluja.

Hail Mary, full of grace!

     – What type of greeting is this? –

Blessed are you among women;
Do not fear, Mary,
You have found grace with God;
Behold, you will conceive in your womb,
And bear a son,
And will call his name Jesus,
He will be great,
And be called the son of the Most High.

     – How can this be, since I have not known man? –

Do not fear, Mary,
the Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High
will overshadow you,
therefore he who will be born
from you is holy,
and will be called the son of God,
and behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her
who was called barren,
since for God nothing is impossible.

     – Behold the handmaiden of the Lord,
       let it be with me according to your word. –

Alleluia.
