Herr, der du vormals genädig gewest deinem Lande
Und hast die Gefangenen Jakobs erlöset:
Herr, der du die Missetat vormals vergeben hast
Deinem Volk und alle ihre Sünde bedecket, Sela:
Herr, der du vormals hast allen deinen Zorn aufgehoben
und dich gewendet von dem Grimm Deines Zornes,
Tröste uns, Gott, unser Heiland,Und laß ab von deiner Ungnade über uns!
Willst du denn ewiglich über uns zürnen,
Willst du deinen Zorn gehen lassen immer für und für?
Willst du uns denn nicht wieder erquicken,
Daß sich dein Volk über dir freuen möge?
Herr, erzeige uns deine Gnade und hilf uns!
Ach, daß ich hören sollte, daß Gott der Herre redete:
Daß er Friede zusagete seinem Volk
Und seinem Heiligen,
Auf daß sie nicht auf eine Torheit geraten!
Doch ist ja seine Hilfe nahe denen, die ihn fürchten,
Daß in unserm Lande Ehre wohne;
Daß Güte und Treue einander begegnen,
Gerechtigkeit und Friede sich küssen;
Daß Treu auf der Erden wachse,
Daß Gerechtigkeit vom Himmel schaue;
Daß Gerechtigkeit dennoch für ihm bleibe
Und im Schwang gehe.
Ehre sie dem Vater und dem Sohn,
Und auch dem heligen Geiste,
Wie es war im Anfang, jetzt und immerdar,
Und von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit, Amen.

Lord, you who were once gracious to your land,
And freed the captive people of Jacob:
Lord, you who once forgave the misdeeds
Of your people and covered over all their sins, Sela:
Lord, you who once took away all your wrath
|And turned yourself away from the harshness of your wrath;
Comfort us, Lord, our salvation,
And abandon your displeasure over us!
Will you then for ever be angry with us,
Will you let your anger last for all time?
Will you then never again revive us,
So that your people might rejoice in you?
Lord, show us your mercy and help us!
Ah, that I might hear that God the Lord would say:
That he would speak peace to his people
And his sacred ones,
So that they would not decide upon a foolishness!
For indeed his aid is near to those that fear him,
So that honor might dwell in our land;
That goodness and loyalty would greet each other,
And righteousness and peace would kiss each other;
So that faithfulness might spring from the earth,
And that justice would look down from heaven;
That righteousness therefore would remain for him and go before him.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son,
And also to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning, is now and for ever,
And from eternity to eternity, Amen.
