Leslie Lindsey Memorial Chapel, Emmanuel Church
The complete Bach Cello Suites
The Free Thursday noon Lindsey Chapel Series will present all six suites for unaccompanied violoncello, BWV 1007-1012, as performed by cellists from the Emmanuel Music ensemble. Whether we perceive them as meditations, dances, or sophisticated virtuoso pieces, the suites can be heard endless times, with new discoveries and delights popping up in each hearing.
The Suites for Unaccompanied Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach are some of the most remarkable and mysterious compositions of the Baroque master. Like the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, they are musically complete in that they achieve - through string crossing and arpeggiation - a sense of fully realized counterpoint on a single instrument. While most movements in the Suites have standard Baroque dance titles, they far exceed mere dance pieces in sophistication. Written between 1717–23, when Bach served as a Kapellmeister in Köthen, they have become absolutely essential repertoire for serious cellists.
