| 1. Arie A Ein ungefärbt Gemüte Von deutscher Treu und Güte Macht uns vor Gott und Menschen schön. Der Christen Tun und Handel, Ihr ganzer Lebenswandel Soll auf dergleichen Fuße stehn. |
1. Aria A An unblemished conscience of clear faith and goodness makes us beautiful before God and mankind. A Christian’s deeds and activities, his entire life’s enterprise shall rest upon this same foot. |
| 2. Rezitativ T Die Redlichkeit Ist eine von den Gottesgaben. Daß sie bei unsrer Zeit So wenig Menschen haben, Das macht, sie bitten Gott nicht drum. Denn von Natur geht unsers Herzens Dichten Mit lauter Bösem um; Soll's seinen Weg auf etwas Gutes richten, So muß es Gott durch seinen Geist regieren Und auf der Bahn der Tugend führen. Verlangst du Gott zum Freunde, So mache dir den Nächsten nicht zum Feinde Durch Falschheit, Trug und List! Ein Christ Soll sich der Taubenart bestreben Und ohne Falsch und Tücke leben. Mach aus dir selbst ein solches Bild, Wie du den Nächsten haben willt! |
2. Recitative T Sincerity is one of God’s gifts. If in these times so few people possess it, this is because they do not request it from God. For by nature the dictates of our hearts consort with pure evil; if its way is to be directed towards some good, God must rule through His spirit and lead it upon the path of virtue. If you desire God as a friend, then do not make your neighbor into an enemy through falsehood, treachery and deceit! A Christian should imitate the manner of doves and live without falsehood and tricks. Make yourself into such an image, as you would have your neighbor be! |

| 4. Rezitativ B Die Heuchelei Ist eine Brut, die Belial gehecket. Wer sich in ihre Larve stecket, Der trägt des Teufels Liberei. Wie? lassen sich denn Christen Dergleichen auch gelüsten? Gott sei's geklagt! die Redlichkeit ist teuer. Manch teuflisch Ungeheuer Sieht wie ein Engel aus. Man kehrt den Wolf hinein, Den Schafspelz kehrt man raus. Wie könnt es ärger sein? Verleumden, Schmähn und Richten, Verdammen und Vernichten Ist überall gemein. So geht es dort, so geht es hier. Der liebe Gott behüte mich dafür! |
4. Recitative B Hypocrisy is a beast coughed up by Belial. Whoever hides in its disguise wears the livery of the devil. What? Should Christians then allow themselves to be deceived? May God forbid! Sincerity is precious. Many devilish monsters appear like angels. Once the wolf is within, the sheep’s pelt is tossed away. How could it be worse? Slander, shame and condemnation, judgment and belittlement is everywhere. Thus it is there, thus it is here. Dear God protect me from it! |

6. Chorale O God, You righteous God. Source of all gifts, without Whom nothing is what it is, from Whom we have everything grant me a healthy body, and that in such a body an uncorrupted soul and pure conscience remain. |
