Deep Calleth Unto Deep was commissioned by Emmanuel Music for the 2025/2026 Cantata season, and is inspired by Bach Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, BWV 21. Serving as source material for BWV 21 are Psalms42 and 43. What I found most appealing about these psalms was the journey from darkness and despair to light and exceeding joy.  Deep Calleth Unto Deep mirrors this motion and prepares the listener for the cantata.
