Schütz made an elaborate and impressive setting of the 23rd Psalm in 1619 for his publication of the Psalms of David. 30 years later another, very different, setting appeared at the head of his 1650 collection known as the Symphoniae Sacrae III. Written in a subtler style, this expressive setting of the most familiar psalm is one of the warmest and most appealing of Schütz' later works.
