motet notes - Victoria

Victoria: O vos omnes

The text  for O vos omnes is adapted from the Latin Vulgate translation of Lamentations 1:12. It was often set, especially in the sixteenth century, as part of the Tenebrae Responsories for Holy Saturday. In our motet, time itself seems to be suspended. The personal feeling of the text is breathtakingly conveyed through carefully nuanced textures, text painting and expansive musical gestures.
