William Walton (1902-1983)
Sir William Turner Walton OM (1902– 1983), considered the leading British composer of his generation, was largely self-taught as a composer. His music combines Romantic passion and jazz-inspired rhythms. Jubilate Deo, a setting of the 100th psalm, was composed for Walton's own college - Christ Church, Oxford - and first performed there during the 1972 English Bach Festival. Projecting a wonderful confidence and majestic swagger, Jubilate Deo begins with chorus and organ sharing a fluent exchange of bold tuttis. The middle section is much more somber as the organ transitions into long note values accompanying a low voice trio of singers and a soprano trio. The original musical idea returns at the end of the piece with the Gloria Patri text.
