Kathryn Nottage is a double bassist currently living and working on the East Coast. After growing up in Rhode Island, Kate completed her undergraduate studies at New England Conservatory, where she studied with bassist Todd Seeber of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. After graduating from NEC in 2017, Kate received her graduate degree from Boston University in 2019. While a student at BU, Kate studied with Edwin Barker, principal bass of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Kate also worked intensively with other members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s bass section, including Benjamin Levy, Lawrence Wolfe, and James Orleans.
Kate is a sought after orchestral musician, and in recent years has appeared with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New World Symphony Orchestra, the Cape Symphony, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, the National Orchestral Institute Festival Orchestra, and the Boston University Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Kate has sat as principal bassist with the NEC Philharmonia in Jordan Hall, and for a sold-out crowd at Boston Symphony Hall. Kate has appeared under the baton of many of today’s most noteworthy conductors, including Andris Nelsons, Thomas Adès, Bramwell Tovey, JoAnn Falletta, Ken-David Masur, Joshua Gersen, Giancarlo Guerrero and Hugh Wolff. Kate plays on a 2015 Kai Arvi bass and a Joseph Kun French bow.
