Ruben Valenzuela is the founder and director of the Bach Collegium San Diego (BCSD). He has led the BCSD in numerous Southern California premiers of Historically Informed Performances of music from the Renaissance, early and high Baroque, through the early Classical period. As such, he regularly collaborates with this country's leading historically informed musicians. He has guest conducted the San Diego Chamber Orchestra in performances of Haydn's Creation, coached and led USC's Early Music Ensemble in a performance of Handel's Dixit Dominus, and coached and led Santa Monica College's Opera Program in staged performances of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and scenes from Duron's zarzuela Salir el Amor del Mundo.
Most recently, he coached and led staged performances of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas with the University of California (Irvine) Opera Program. His performances have been described as "dramatic and "vibrant" and "able to unlock the true power of Baroque music (SanDiegoStory.com). As an organist and accompanist he has toured throughout England, Germany (Thuringia), northern Spain, and to the Festival Internacional del Órgano Barroco in Mexico City and Zamora, Michoacán. In 2012, he toured with members of the BCSD to Bolivia as part of the IX Internacional de Música Renacentista y Barroca Misiones de Chiquitos. In 2012, he was chosen by San Diego Metro Magazine as one of "Twenty Men Who Impact San Diego" for his outstanding work with the Bach Collegium San Diego, and his longstanding contributions to the San Diego arts community.
