Erster Teil

Part One

Geh, Jesu, geh zu deiner Pein!
Ich will so lange dich beweinen,
Bis mir dein Trost wird wieder scheinen,
Da ich versöhnet werde sein.

Go, Jesus, go to your suffering!
so long will I mourn you,
Until your consolation appears to me again,
When I shall be absolved.

Und nach zween Tagen war Ostern, und die Tage der süßen Brote. Und die Hohenpriester und Schriftgelehrten suchten, wie sie ihn mit Listen ergriffen und töteten. Sie sprachen aber:

And in two days was Passover, and the festival of the unleavened bread. And the high priests and scribes sought a way for them to seize him and kill him by stealth. They said, however:

Ja nicht auf das Fest, dass nicht ein Aufruhr im Volk werde.

Yet not during the feast, so that there would not be an uproar among the people.

Und da er in Bethanien war, in Simonis, des Aussätzigen Hause, und saß zu Tische, da kam ein Weib, die hatte ein Glas mit ungefälschtem und köstlichem Narden-Wasser: und sie zerbrach das Glas, und goss es auf sein Haupt. Da waren etliche, die wurden unwillig, und sprachen:

And while he was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, and sat at table, a woman came who had a vial with purlfied and costly perfume water: and she broke open the vial and poured it out on his head. There were several who were against this, and said:

Was soll doch dieser Unrat? Man könnte das Wasser mehr denn um dreihundert Groschen verkauft haben, und dasselbe den Armen geben.

What is the meaning of this rash act? This water could have been sold for better than three hundred groshen, and the money given to the poor.

Und murreten über sie.

And they muttered against her.

Sie stellen uns wie Ketzern nach,
Nach unserm Blut sie trachten,
Noch rühmen sie sich Christen auch,
Die Gott allein groß achten.
Ach Gott! Der teure Name dein,
Muss ihrer Schalkheit Deckel sein,
Du wirst einmal aufwachen.
("Wo Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält," verse 4)

They pursue us as heretics,
They seek our blood;
They even proclaim themselves Christians,
Who alone hold God in awe.
Ah God, that your precious name
Should be the shield over their mischief;
One day you will awaken.

Jesus aber sprach:

Jesus
Lasset sie zufrieden; was bekümmert ihr sie? Sie hat ein gutes Werk an mir getan. Ihr habt allezeit Arme bei euch, und wenn ihr wollt, könnt ihr ihnen Gutes tun; mich aber habt ihr nicht allezeit! Sie hat getan, was sie konnte; sie ist zuvor gekommen, meinen Leichnam zu salben zu meinem Begräbnis. Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wo dies Evangelium gepredigt wird in aller Welt, da wird man auch das sagen zu ihrem Gedächtnis, was sie jetzt getan hat.

Und Judas Ischariot, einer von den Zwölfen, ging hin zu den Hohenpriestern, dass er ihn verriete. Da sie das höreten, wurden sie froh, und verhießen ihm das Geld zu geben. Und er suchte, wie er ihn füglich verriete.

But Jesus said:

Jesus
Leave her in peace; why do you trouble her? She has done a good deed for me. You will have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish, you can do good for them; but you will not always have me! She has done what she could; she has come forth to anoint my body for my burial. Truly I say to you: wherever this Gospel will be preached in the whole world they will tell, in her memory, what she has done.


Evangelist
And Judas Ischariot, one of the twelve, went in to the high priests, to betray him. When they heard this, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought for a way to accomplish the betrayal.

The world has judged me deceitfully,
With lies and false statements,
Many traps and secret snares.
Lord, perceive me truthfully
In this danger;
Protect me from malicious falsehoods!

Und am ersten Tage der süßen Brote, da man das Osterlamm opferte, sprachen seine Jünger zu ihm:

And on the first day of unleavened bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said to him:

Wo willst du, dass wir hingehen, und bereiten, dass du das Osterlamm essest?

Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover lamb?

Und er sandte seiner Jünger zween, und sprach zu ihnen:

Jesus
Gehet hin in die Stadt, und es wird euch ein Mensch begegnen, der trägt einen Krug mit Wasser, folget ihm nach, und wo er eingehet, da sprecht zu dem Hauswirt: der Meister lässt dir sagen: Wo ist das Gasthaus, darin ich das Osterlamm esse mit meinen Jüngern? Und er wird euch einen großen Saal zeigen, der gepflastert und bereitet ist, daselbst richtet für uns zu.

Und die Jünger gingen aus, und kamen in die Stadt, und funden, wie wie er ihnen gesagt hatte, und bereiteten das Osterlamm. Am Abend aber kam er mit den Zwölfen. Und als sie zu Tische saßen, und aßen, sprach Jesus:

Wahrlich, ich sage euch, der mit mir isset, wird mich verraten.

Und sie wurden traurig, und sagten zu ihm, einer nach dem andern:

And he sent his twelve disciples, and said to them:

Jesus
Go into the city, and a certain person will encounter you, who will bear a jar of water; follow him, and where he enters, say this to the owner: the Master says to you: where is your guest hall, within which I may eat the Passover with my disciples? And he will show you a large hall, which is furnished and ready; set this up for us.

And the disciples went out, and into the city, and found it as Jesus had said, and prepared the Passover feast. And in the evening he arrived there with the twelve. And as they sat at the table and ate, Jesus said:

Truly I say to you: one who eats with me will betray me.

And they were sorrowful, and said to him, one after the other:

Er antwortete und sprach zu ihnen:

Jesus
Einer aus den Zwölfen, der mit mir in die Schüssel tauchet. Zwar des Menschen Sohn gehet hin, wie von ihm geschrieben stehet. Wehe aber dem Menschen, durch welchen des Menschen Sohn verraten wird: es wäre demselben Menschen besser, dass er nie geboren wäre.

Und indem sie aßen, nahm Jesus das Brot, dankte und brach's, und gab's ihnen und sprach:

Nehmet, esset, das ist mein Leib.

Evangelist
Und nahm den Kelch, und dankte, und gab ihnen den; und sie trunken alle daraus. Und er sprach zu ihnen:

Jesus
Das ist mein Blut des Neuen Testaments, das für viele vergossen wird. Wahrlich, ich sage euch, dass ich hinfort nicht trinken werde vom Gewächse des Weinstocks, bis auf den Tag, da ich's neu trinke in dem Reich Gottes.

He answered and said to them:

Jesus
it is one of the twelve, who has dipped his hand in the bowl with me. The Son of Man will indeed pass away as it stands written of him. Yet woe to the man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed: It would be better for this man if he had never been born.

Evangelist
And while they ate, Jesus took the bread, blessed and broke it and gave it to them and said:

Jesus
Take, eat, this is my body.

Evangelist
And he took the cup and blessed it, gave it to them; and they all drank from it. And he said to them:

Jesus
This is my blood of the new covenant, which will be poured out for many. Truly I say to you, that from now on I will not drink again from this fruit of the vine, until upon the day when I drink it again in the kingdom of God.

Und da sie den Lobgesang gesprochen hatten, gingen sie hinaus an den Ölberg. Und Jesus sprach zu ihnen:

Ihr werdet Euch in dieser Nacht alle an mir ärgern. Denn es stehet geschrieben: ich werde den Hirten schlagen, und die Schafe werden sich verstreuen. Aber nachdem ich auferstehe, will ich vor euch hingehen in Galiläam.

And when they had spoken the benediction, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Then Jesus said to them:

Jesus
Tonight you will all be angry at me. For it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered. When, however, I rise again, I shall go before you into Galilee.

Wach auf, o Mensch, vom Sünden-Schlaf!
Ermuntre dich, verlorenes Schaf,
Und bessre bald dein Leben!
Wach auf, es ist doch hohe Zeit,
Es kommt heran die Ewigkeit,

Petrus aber saget zu ihm:

Und wenn sie sich alle ärgerten, so wollte ich doch mich nicht ärgern.

Und Jesus sprach zu ihm:

Wahrlich, ich sage dir, heute in dieser Nacht, ehe denn der Hahn zweimal krähet, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen.

Ja, wenn ich mit dir auch sterben müßte, wollt ich dich nicht verleugnen.

Peter, however, said to him:

Even though everyone will be angry at you, yet I will never be angry.

And Jesus said to him:

Jesus
Truly, I say to you: today, in this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.

But he said insistently:

Indeed, even if I must die with you, I will not deny you.

Dasselbe gleichen sagten sie alle.
Und sie kamen zu dem Hofe, mit Namen Gethsemane. Und er sprach zu seinen Jüngern:

Setzet euch hier, bis ich hingehe, und bete.

Und nahm zu sich Petrum, und Jacobum, und Johannem; und fing an zu zittern und zu zagen, und sprach:

Meine Seele ist betrübt bis in den Tod, enthaltet euch hier, und wachet.

They all said exactly the same.
And they came to a garden, called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples:

Jesus
Sit here while I go over there and pray.

Evangelist
And He took Peter and James and John; and began to tremble and despair, and said:

Jesus
My soul is troubled unto death; stay here and keep watch!

Und ging ein wenig fürbass, fiel auf die Erde, und betete, dass so es möglich wäre, die Stunde vorüberginge, und sprach:

And he went a little farther, fell on the ground, and prayed: that it be possible for the hour would pass by, and said:

Abba, mein Vater, es ist dir alles möglich, überhebe mich dieses Kelchs. Doch nicht wie ich will, sondern wie du willst.

Abba, my Father, for whom all is possible,
relieve me of this cup. Yet not as I will, rather as you will.

Und kam, und fand sie schlafend. Und sprach zu Petrus:

Jesus
Simon, schläfest du? Vermöchtest du denn nicht eine Stunde zu wachen? Wachet und betet, dass ihr nicht in Versuchung fallet. Der Geist ist willig, aber das Fleisch ist schwach.

Evangelist
Und ging wieder hin, und sprach dieselben Worte. Und kam wieder, und fand sie abermal schlafend, und ihre Augen waren voll Schlafs, und wussten nicht, was sie ihm antworteten. Und er kam zum drittenmal und sprach zu ihnen:

Jesus
Ach wollt ihr nun schlafen und ruhen? Es ist genug, die Stunde ist kommen. Siehe, des Menschen Sohn wird überantwortet in der Sünder Hände. Stehet auf, lasst uns gehen. Siehe, der mich verrät, ist nahe.

And he came and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter:

Jesus
Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not remain awake for one hour? Stay awake, and pray, so that you do not fall into temptation! The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Evangelist
And he went away another time and spoke the same words. And he came back and found them sleeping, nevertheless, and their eyes were full of sleep, and they didn't know how to answer him. Then he came for a third time and said to them:

Jesus
Alas! Do you wish to sleep and rest now? It is enough, the hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is to be handed over into the hands of sinners. Get up, let us go; see, he who betrays me is here.

Und alsbald, da er noch redet, kam herzu Judas, der Zwölfen einer, und eine große Schar mit ihm, mit Schwertern und mit Stangen, von den Hohenpriestern und Schriftgelehrten und Ältesten. Und der Verräter hatte ihnen ein Zeichen gegeben, und gesagt:

Welchen ich küssen werde, der ist's, den greifet, und führet ihn gewiss.

Evangelist
Und da er kam, trat er bald zu ihm, und sprach zu ihm:

Judas
Rabbi, Rabbi.

Evangelist
Und küsset ihn.

And just as he was speaking, there came Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a large crowd with swords and spears from the high priest and the elders of the people . And the betrayer had given them a sign and said:


Judas
The one that I will kiss is he; seize him, and lead him away securely.

Evangelist
And when he came, he stepped quickly to Jesus and said:

Judas
Rabbi, Rabbi.

Evangelist
And kissed him.

Die aber legten ihre Hände an ihn, und griffen ihn. Einer aber von denen, die dabei stunden, zog sein Schwert aus, und schlug des Hohenpriesters Knecht, und hieb ihm ein Ohr ab. Und Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen:

Jesus
Ihr seid ausgegangen, als zu einem Mörder, mit Schwerden und mit Stangen, mich zu fassen. Ich bin täglich im Tempel bei euch gesessen, und habe gelehret, und ihr habt mich nicht gegriffen. Aber auf dass die Schrift erfüllet würde.

Then they laid hands on him and seized him. One of those, however, who stood by, drew out his sword and struck a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. And Jesus answered and said to them:


Jesus
You have come here, as if for a murderer, with swords and spears to take me. I have daily sat among you and have taught in the Temple, and you did not arrest me. However, all of this is to fulfill the writings of the prophets.

was present in the garden,
when they captured you
tightly with cruel bonds.
When the evil enemy will
bind us with sin,

Und die Jünger verließen ihn alle, und flohen. Und es war ein Jüngling, der folgete ihm nach; der war mit Leinwand bekleidet auf der bloßen Haut; und diesen Jüngling griffen sie. Er aber ließ den Leinwand fahren und flohe nackt von ihnen.

And all the disciples deserted him and fled.And there was a young man, who followed after him; and he wore a linen sheet over his bare skin; and they seized this youth. However he let the sheet fall and fled naked from them.

Ich will hier bei dir stehen,
Verlasse mich doch nicht,
Von dir will ich nicht gehn,
Wenn dir dein Herze bricht,
Wenn dein Haupt wird erblassen
Im letzten Todesstoß,
alsdann will dich fassen

Zweiter Teil

Part Two

24. Arie T
Mein Tröster ist nicht mehr bei mir,
mein Jesu, soll ich dich verlieren,
und zum Verderben sehen führen?
Das kömmt der Seele schmerzlich für.
Der Unschuld, welche nichts verbrochen,
Dem Lamm, das ohne Missetat
Wird in dem ungerechten Rat
Ein Todesurteil zugesprochen.

My consoler is no longer with me,
My Jesus, shall I abandon you,
and see you led away to destruction?
This is painful for my soul.
Upon innocence, which committed no crime,
On the Lamb, without sin,
in an unjust council
an death sentence will be pronounced.

25a. Evangelist
Und sie führeten Jesum zu den Hohenpriestern und Ältesten und Schriftgelehrten. Petrus aber folgete ihm nach von ferne, bis hinein in des Hohenpriesters Palast; und saß bei den Knechten, und wärmte sich bei dem Licht. Aber die Hohenpriester und der ganze Rat suchten Zeugnis wider Jesum und funden nichts. Viel gaben falsches Zeugnis wider Jesum, aber ihr Zeugnis stimmete nicht überein. Und etliche stunden auf, und gaben falsches Zeugnis wider ihn, und sprachen:

And they brought him to the high priests and elders and scribes. Peter, however, followed Him from afar to the palace of the high priest, and sat with the servants, and warmed himself by the fire. The high priests, however, and the entire council sought testimony against Jesus, and found none. Many gave false witness against Jesus, but their testimony did not agree. And a few stood up and gave false testimony against him and said:

Wir haben gehöret, dass er saget: Ich will den Tempel, der mit Händen gemacht ist, abbrechen und in dreien Tagen einen andern bauen, der nicht mit Händen gemacht ist.

We have heard that he said: I will destroy the temple, which is made with hands, and in three days build another, which is not made with hands.

Aber ihr Zeugnis stimmete noch nicht überein.

But their testimony did not agree.

Was Menschen Kraft und Witz anfäht,
Soll uns billig nicht schrecken,
Er sitzet an der höchsten Stätt,
Er wird ihr'n Rat aufdecken.
Wenn sie aufs klügste greifen an,
So geht doch Gott ein andre Bahn,
Es steht in seinen Händen.

He will expose their counsels.
When they seize upon the cleverest ideas,

Und der Hohepriester stund unter ihnen auf, und fragte Jesum; und sprach:

Hohepriester
Antwortest du nichts zu dem, was diese wider dich zeugen?

Er aber schwieg stille, und antwortete nichts.

And the high priest stood up among them, and questioned Jesus, and said:

High Priest
Do you answer nothing to this, that they say against you?

Evangelist
But he was silent, and answered nothing.

Befiehl Du Deine Wege,
Und was Dein Herze kränkt,
Der allertreusten Pflege,
Des, der den Himmel lenkt,
Der Wolken, Luft und Winden,
Gibt Wege, Lauf und Bahn,
Der wird auch Wege finden,

Commit your path,
And whatever troubles your heart,
To the most faithful caretaker,
He, who directs the heavens,

Da fraget ihn der Hohepriester abermal und sprach zu ihm:

Hohepriester
Bist du Christus, der Sohn des Hochgelobten?


Evangelist
Jesus sprach:

Jesus
Ich bin's. Und ihr werdet sehen des Menschen Sohn sitzen zur rechten Hand der Kraft, und kommen auf des Himmels Wolken.

Evangelist
Da zerriss der Hohepriester seine Kleider und sprach:

Hohepriester
Was dürfen wir weiter Zeugen? Ihr habt gehört die Gotteslästerung. Was dünket Euch?

Evangelist
Sie aber verdammten ihn alle, dass er des Todes schuldig wäre. Da fingen an etliche ihn zu verspeien, und mit Fäusten zu schlagen, umd zu ihm zu sagen:

And the high priest questioned him again and said to him:

High Priest
Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?

Evangelist
Jesus said:

Jesus
I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and approaching upon the clouds of heaven.

Evangelist
Then the high priest tore his garments and said:

High Priest

He had a custom during the festival, however, of releasing a prisoner to the people, whichever they wanted. But there was one, named Barabbas, captured with the rioters, who had committed a murder during the riot. And the people came out and asked that he do what he always did. But Pilate said to them:

Pilate
Do you want me to release the King of the Jews to you?

Evangelist
Because he knew that the high priests had delivered him out of envy. But the high priests convinced the people that they would rather ask for Barabbas. So when Pilate spoke again and said:‍

What shall I do then with him, whom you accuse of being the King of the Jews?

Then the soldiers took him into the courthouse, and gathered around him the entire troop; and put a purple mantle on him; and they wove a crown of thorns and put it on him. And they began to hail:

And they beat his head with the reed, and spat on him, and fell on their knees and paid homage to him.

And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe, and dressed him in his own clothes, and led him out to crucify him. And they forced a passer-by, named Simon of Cyrene, who came from the country (and was the father of Alexander and Rufus), to carry his Cross behind him. And they brought him to the place Golgatha, which is translated 'Place of the Skull'. And they gave him myrrh mixed with wine to drink, but he did not accept it. And when they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes, and through lots over them, to see who would win.
