Journey through two distinct yet intertwined performances that explore the enduring power of Schubert's timeless Winterreise. The stark beauty of the original song cycle, performed by David Tinervia and pianist Ian Watson, is paired with its modern echo: Hans Zender's haunting, fragmented 1993 reinterpretation featuring tenor Nicholas Phan and the Orchestra of Emmanuel Music. Zender strips away romantic veneer, revealing a raw, visceral landscape of isolation. We invite you to reimagine Winter’s chill through this two-part concert experience as we sustain our commitment to broaden and cultivate a legacy of Bach from past to present.

To bridge the journey from Schubert to Zender, we also invite you to join us for a conversation between Grammy award-winning tenor Nicholas Phan and Emmanuel Music’s Artistic Director Ryan Turner on Thursday, March 19 at the Goethe-Institut.
