Cantata for Easter Sunday

1. Arie T
Ich weiß, daß mein Erlöser lebt,
Er lebt und mir zur Freude.
Laß sein, daß ich im Leide,
In Arbeit, Müh und Plage
Viel Stunden meiner Tage
Muß auf der Welt verschmerzen;
Blüht doch der Trost im Herzen.

1. Aria T
I know that my Redeemer lives,
he lives, to my joy.
So be it, that in sorrow,
in labor, toil and trouble
for many hours of my day
I must struggle upon the earth;
still comfort blooms in my heart.

2. Rezitativ T
Durch den Verräter angelegt;
Ward auch mein Herze wund,
Da man ihm soviel Wunden mit scharfen Geißeln schmiß;
Hab ich so manchen Stich
Mit Ach und Weh’ empfunden,
Da man sein Haupt mit Dornen stach
Und jämmerlich zerriß;
Und ihn die Grausamkeit an solches schlug;
An meiner Stelle wollen büßen.
Und das Gesetz an mir nichts mehr zu fordem habe;

2. Recitative T
He lives, and is risen from death!
On this lies the foundation, which as a rock
bears my firm faith to the hope of my future bliss.
I lamented his bonds in the garden,
which the envy and venom of the Enemy
laid upon him through the betrayer;
my heart was also wounded,
when he received so many wounds
through the strike of the sharp whip;
I experienced so many pricks
with pain and misery,
when his head was stuck with thorns
and wretchedly scratched;
I followed him half-dead to Golgatha,
where he bore the burden and shame
of the Cross by himself.
And cruelty itself nailed him upon it;
my soul was full of anguish,
when they brought his body to the grave.
And all the grief came to a sorrowful end,
yet with his flowing blood
my tears of joy must flow together,
since he, through his death, wished to atone for my wretched guilt in my place.
However, I would be poorly comforted,
and not even fully redeemed,
if he had not, out of his own strength,
risen again.
But now the consolation is at hand,
and stands firm,
that even that last scrap has been paid for me,
and the law has nothing more to require of me;
For today God has released my obligation
from the grave, as if from prison,
free once more.

3. Arie T
Gott Lob, daß mein Erlöser lebt,
Er lebt, so wird sein Leben
Im Tode mir gegeben.
Drum will ich freudig sterben,
Die Freude dort zu erben,
Die mir im Engel-Orden
Von ihm vermachet worden.

3. Aria T
Praise God, that my Redeemer lives;
he lives, thus his life will be
given to me in death.
Therefore I will die joyfully,
inheriting delight there,
which among the ranks of angels
has been ordained for me by him.

4. Rezitativ T

4. Recitative T
Thus I bid defiance to all the devils!
My champion, my Jesus is my Protector.
Faith will never bring me shame.
Should I give up, lost?
Then Christ is not risen!
Yet he lives, so I must also
rise up again to life through him
and come to rest and honor in his realm.

5. Arie T
Nun, ich halte mich bereit:
Meines Leibes Sterblichkeit
Auf der Erden abzulegen.
Kommt, ihr Engel, kommt entgegen,
Traget meine Seele hin,
Daß ich bald bei Jesus bin!
Ach, wie herzlich wünsch ich mir:
wär ich heute noch bei dir!

5. Aria T
Now I make myself ready:
the mortality of my body
to lay upon the earth.
come, you angels, approach and come,
bear my soul away,
so that I may soon be with Jesus!
Ah, how dearly I wish it:
were I with you even today!
